Mr. Abbott joined the firm in 1971 and is a member of the firm through Hirschel T. Abbott, Jr. (A Professional Corporation). He Co-chairs the Tax Practice Group and served two terms on the firm's Management Committee. Mr. Abbott is admitted to the bars of Mississippi and Louisiana and is a Board Certified Tax Law Specialist and a Certified Public Accountant.
Representative Matters
Counsel to private clients, including businesses, business owners and boards. Among other clients are high net worth individuals and families seeking advice on business, property, tax and estate planning matters. Further representation includes advice to trustees, executors and beneficiaries.
Advises clients on the structure, funding and operational aspects of public and private non-profit corporations and charitable foundations, including organization, qualification with the Internal Revenue Service and related tax-exempt organization compliance.
Clients include numerous closely-held business entities for planning and structure of acquisitions, mergers, executive compensation, buy-sell agreements and general business matters.
Public non-profit, charitable and civic organization clients include: Lambeth House, Inc. (A Continuing Care Retirement Community in New Orleans), Episcopal Housing for Seniors, Inc., Trinity Episcopal School, Trinity Church, Tulane University and the University of Virginia.
Education
Mr. Abbott received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1971 from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was named to the Order of the Coif and served on the Virginia Law Review. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in Accounting from the University of Mississippi. Professional and Civic Activities
Mr. Abbott is a member of the New Orleans Estate Planning Council, the Association of Employee Benefit Planners of New Orleans and a Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (former member of the Charitable Planning and Exempt Organizations Committee) and a member of the Trust Code Committee of the Louisiana Law Institute. He is a past member of the Louisiana State Bar Association Tax Specialization Advisory Commission, serving as Chair, 1997-98 and the Board of the Tulane Estate Planning Institute. As an assistant professor at Louisiana State University he taught Corporate Tax, Income Tax and Corporation Law, 1976-77. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Louisiana State Bar Association, The Mississippi Bar and the New Orleans Bar Association and has memberships in the Section of Taxation, Business Law Section and the Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Section of the ABA and comparable sections of the Louisiana State Bar Association. Mr. Abbott has been named to The Best Lawyers in America in the field of Trusts and Estates.
Among civic leadership positions, Mr. Abbott has served on the Board of Directors, and as Chair of Trinity Episcopal School, New Orleans; the Vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church, New Orleans and serves as Chancellor for Trinity Episcopal Church; the Board of Directors of public non-profit corporations, including Lambeth House, Inc., (a Continuing Care Retirement Community), and Episcopal Housing for Seniors, Inc. and several private non-profit foundations. He is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Louisiana Civil Service League and received the Monte M. Lemann Award in 1989.
