History

In 1929, Saul Stone and his lifelong friend John Minor Wisdom founded Wisdom and Stone, the firm that would become Stone Pigman Walther Wittmann L.L.C. In the 1940s, Wisdom and Stone represented retail dealers in their opposition to the resale price-fixing laws then common in Louisiana and elsewhere. Their successful effort, which culminated in a landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court, marked the first of many appearances by Stone Pigman lawyers in the nation’s highest court. John Minor Wisdom joined the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in 1957 to begin his storied career as a distinguished jurist.

By the 1960s and ’70s, Stone Pigman was well known for its corporate, tax and real estate practices. Beginning in the 1970s, the firm’s litigation practice grew rapidly from its antitrust base into securities, oil and gas, utility regulation, bank regulation, insurance regulation, toxic tort, environmental, class action and multi-district litigation.

Today, Stone Pigman is known throughout the Gulf South for its pre-eminent litigation practice. Its business practice has grown as well, expanding from a corporate, tax and real estate base to include mergers and acquisitions, securities, corporate finance, health care, employment benefits, environmental and intellectual property law.
