Representative Matters

Represented beneficiaries to a multi-million dollar annuity in a declaratory judgment action filed in the Eastern District of Louisiana.

Defended a manufacturer in a contractual defense and indemnity claim arising out of a products liability suit.

Representing, as local counsel, a manufacturer in multi-district litigation arising out of a Gulf of Mexico oil spill in defense of claims for personal injury and economic and property damages.

Represented, as local counsel, an international construction and environmental remediation firm in defense of class actions and individual actions alleging liability for flooding of the greater New Orleans area as a result of breaches of levees and floodwalls during the passage of Hurricane Katrina.

Representing an insured in a multi-million dollar claim for liability insurance coverage and, in an unrelated matter, defending an international liability insurer in a coverage dispute.

Represented majority shareholders in a closely held corporation in shareholder disputes.

Represented, as local counsel, a major tobacco company in defense of a state class action for medical monitoring and smoking cessation and in individual wrongful death claims.

Represented an air compressor manufacturer in a personal injury individual action.

Represented a medical equipment service provider in injunction proceedings arising out of contractual disputes.

Represented an international retailer in the Chinese drywall multi-district litigation.

Represented an international law firm in the defense of legal malpractice claims.

Represented a major energy company in a mass toxic tort action alleging personal injuries, resulting from a chemical spill in Southwest Louisiana.

Represented a major pharmaceutical company in an individual personal injury suit alleging design defects in its patented laboratory screening test.

Represented, as local counsel, an international credit reporting agency in Fair Credit Reporting Act claims.

Ms. Bertaut is a past president of the New Orleans Bar Association, serving the Association during the period of the City's return after Hurricane Katrina.  She is currently chair of the Association's Wellness and Stress Relief Committee and has previously chaired the Bench Bar, Publications, Continuing Legal Education, Lawyer Referral Service, Public Relations and Women's Committees of the Association.  She received the Association’s 2003 Outstanding Service Award.  Ms. Bertaut is a Master Barrister in the New Orleans Bar Association American Inn of Court and served as the Inn’s president (1997 – 2003).  She was appointed by the Louisiana Supreme Court to The Committee on Mandatory Continuing Legal Education.  Ms. Bertaut was the treasurer of the New Orleans Bar Foundation and a fellow of the Louisiana Bar Foundation.

Ms. Bertaut is a member of the American Bar Association and is active in the leadership of the ABA Section of Litigation.  She is currently a Co-Chair of the Section's Regional Meetings Committee and has previously served as a Division Director; co-chair of the Membership and Marketing, Advanced Planning and the Woman Advocate Committees; and a member of the Federal Practice Task Force of the Section of Litigation.  She has served as the delegate of the New Orleans Bar Association to the ABA House of Delegates.

Ms. Bertaut has been appointed to the ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs Advisory Committee.  She is also a member of the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel, the Defense Research Institute, the Claims & Litigation Management Alliance, and the Association of Women Attorneys.  She is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America.

Ms. Bertaut is an active speaker and lecturer and has served on the faculty of the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel Trial Academy and the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.  Her views on the defense and management of mass torts have been published nationally by the Defense Research Institute.

Among her civic and charitable endeavors, Ms. Bertaut served as a member of the St. Mary's Dominican High School Board of Directors.  She has served as an Alumni Association Officer and as a Charter Member of the Board of Visitors for the College of Liberal Arts of the University of New Orleans.
